Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions and answers about the Smartive system — installation, safety and everyday use.

Installation and wiring

Who can install the Smartive system?

Installing the central unit and the modules is a qualified person's job, inside a closed electrical or control cabinet. Wiring relay branches that switch 230 VAC may only be done by an electrician. After that, anyone can handle app setup and everyday use.

Why is a separate circuit breaker required in front of the relay outputs?

The relay is only a switching element: it opens and closes the circuit, but it does not protect against overload or short circuit. The external circuit breaker or fuse ensures that, in a fault, the circuit is disconnected automatically before overheating or fire can occur. That is why every relay branch must have the specified rated external protection in front of it — this is an installation requirement, not a recommendation.

What power supply does the central unit need?

Only a CE-marked, 5 VDC, safety extra-low voltage (SELV) power supply may be used. For the Raspberry Pi 4 variant at least 15 W is recommended; for a Raspberry Pi 5 variant with full USB/peripheral load, 25 W is recommended.

How many modules can I connect to the system?

Modules can be daisy-chained through the extender port. Each module must receive a unique address via the jumpers on it — two modules with the same address cause a communication collision. Addressing details are on the page for the given module.

Safety

What does it mean that the relay is “dry-contact”?

It means the relay only provides a floating switching contact: it does not output its own voltage, but opens or closes the circuit the installer wires to it. The switched circuit's supply, protection and isolation must therefore always be provided by the installation.

What happens during a power outage?

During a power outage the system does not operate, and the relays return to their default (open) state. When power returns, the central unit restarts automatically and the settings are retained. For critical loads (for example heating) it is worth choosing wiring that still gives a safe state during a power outage.

Are software updates safe?

Yes. Smartive firmware updates arrive over the internet (OTA) and are protected by a digital signature — the device only accepts an authentic update from the manufacturer. Smartive compliance commitments do not cover software modified by a third party.

Usage

Can the system be reached remotely as well?

Yes, you can choose between two modes: a local connection only works on the home network, while Smartive Cloud makes the system reachable from anywhere — this requires a Smartive Cloud account.

Does the system work with Google Home?

Yes, Smartive can be integrated with Google Home. Setup steps are on the Google Home page.

What should I do if the central unit is unreachable?

Follow the steps on the Troubleshooting page: restart, check the LEDs, then review the router settings. The most common causes are a network connection fault or a damaged SD card.
